Three Kyiv Mohyla Academy Alumni Elected to Parliament of Ukraine
Henadij Zubko, Serhiy Labaziuk, both alumni of the Kyiv Mohyla Business School MBA Program, and Rostyslav Pavlenko, political analyst, Director of the School of Political Analysis and Kyiv Mohyla Academy graduate and doctoral candidate, have been elected to the Parliament of Ukraine.
The administration, faculty and students of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy congratulate them on their electoral victory. As they strengthen their positions they are challenging the current status quo. They are the leaders of Ukraine’s future. Many are active members of the Kyiv Mohyla Alumni Association and support their Alma Mater.
Many alumni of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy have become top executives and owners of national and international business enterprises, respected faculty members at various universities, leaders in the non-profit sector, lawyers, sociologists, public servants, artists, actors, and members of Ukraine’s evolving civil society.
Center of the History of Ukraine’s Nation-building Movements in the Twentieth Century Established
The establishment of the Center of the History of Ukraine’s Nation-building Movements in the Twentieth Centuryat National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy marks another milestone in the research and academic work dedicated to Ukraine’s nation-building efforts. Volodymyr Vjatrovych has been appointed director of the Center.
Volodymyr Vjatrovych is a historian, researcher, author, and leader in Ukraine’s developing civil society. He is the former Director of the Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine. He is a doctoral candidate, head of the Academic Council of the Center of Ukraine’s Liberation Movement in Lviv, member of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Museum of Victims of Occupation Regimes known as "Lonskyj Prison".
UKMA Scholars Publish What now for EU-Ukraine relations?
The EU Observer published an article of opinion by Iryna Solonenko and Dr. Andreas Umland, two scholars from Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The article What now for EU-Ukraine relations? proposes specific, tangible steps to re-intensify EU-Ukraine relations.
Iryna Solonenko graduated from National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in 1999 with a degree in History, received her Master’s degree at Central-European University in Budapest. She is a PhD Candidate in European Integration at the national Academy of Public Administration in Kyiv, and is a researcher into EU-eastern policies at the European University Viadrina of Frankfurt/Oder in Germany.
Andreas Umland, PhD, teaches in the German and European Studies program at the National University of Mohyla Academy. He holds an M.A. from Stanford University, an M.Phil. from Oxford University, a diploma and doctorate from the Free University of Berlin, and a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
Dr. Mykhailo Minakov Speaks at Wilson Center
As reported on the Kennan Institute webpage, in the wake of the recent Ukrainian parliamentary elections on October 28, 2012, Kennan Institute Fulbright Scholar Mykhailo Minakov, who is an Associate Professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, spoke with the Kennan Institute about issues surrounding the elections.
Dr. Minakov holds an undergraduate, Master’s and PhD degrees from National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He is the president of the Foundation for Good Politics http://www.fundgp.com/en/, Secretary of the Kant Society in Ukraine, and is the author of 3 books and approximately 60 articles in philosophy, political analysis, cultural critique and epistemology.
His project at the Wilson Center is "Philosophy, Politics and Social Modernization in the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus". Mykhailo Minakov successfully combined his academic career with analytical and program jobs at G.Soros Foundation, Eurasia Foundation, V.Pinchuk Foundation, and UNDP in Ukraine.

Hunger Strike Leader Speaks at Graduation Ceremony
Oksana Nezhyvenko, fourth year Kyiv Mohyla Academy student in Finance, and a leading organizer of the recent hunger strike to protest the illegally passed Law on Languages, spoke at the opening ceremony of the academic year in September 2012, and emphasized the role played by Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in strengthening her character and the Academy’s role in building the Ukrainian nation.
Her outstanding scholastic achievements and her dedication and personal sacrifice for social issues and national reforms exemplify the ideals of the Academy’s student body.
Lecture: Concept of Decentralization in Ukraine?
Experience in Switzerland and other Western European countries
(Kyiv, NaUKMA) With the assistance of the Swiss Embassy in Ukraine, a series of lectures were held in Ukraine by Dr. Nicholas Schmitt, Research Fellow at the Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and and Mr. Peter Schonenberger, former Member of Government of the Canton of St.Gallen, Switzerland. A seminar was held at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy on September 17, followed by a lively discussion. The topic was highly relevant to Ukraine in the current political environment, titled, "Concept of Decentralization in Ukraine? Experience in Switzerland and other Western European countries".
The speakers spoke about the experience of Switzerland and other European countries with decentralization, including the issue of fiscal decentralization, and local city management, with a focus on the inclusion of the voice of civil society.
The events took place at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy and the Diplomatic Academy.
EU President Jerzy Buzek Speaks at Kyiv Mohyla Academy
(Kyiv, NaUKMA) On September 14, Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2012, presented a lecture titled, "European Union and Ukraine: Which Europe Are We Striving For", at National University Kyiv Mohyla Academy. At this crucial time of Ukraine’s relations with the European Union, the presentation drew a large audience of students, faculty, and guests, and the attention of the press.
Mr. Buzek, who is often referred to as the "Lawyer of Ukraine" in the EU, stated that it is impossible to imagine Ukraine without Europe and Europe without Ukraine. He said that Europe, including Ukraine and Poland, needs to launch a new era of cooperation and understanding. In an appeal to the students of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, Jerzy Buzek expressed his belief that it is the role of the younger generation to exercise the right of freedom of choice and play a key role in this process of European integration.
INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC CONFERENCE "PARLIAMENTARY READINGS"
TO PROMOTE MECHANISMS OF LEGISLATIVE FUNCTIONS, OVERSIGHT, AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
(Kyiv) The Agency for Legislative Initiatives, the Law Students Research Association "Scholaris", the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Social Technologies of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy will jointly conduct the Third International Academic Conference "Parliamentary Readings" dedicated to parliamentary studies. The Conference will take place on December 7th 2012 in Kyiv.
The initiative promotes a new level of expert and academic discourse in Ukraine to examine such issues as the mechanisms for legislative functions, to allow legislators to present and defend new legislation, oversight of powers, internal structure and organization, rules for debates with opposition, allowing for public participation, and for Parliamentary discourse through which democracy functions.
