to the Graduates of the Class of 2012

When The Impossible Becomes Possible

The graduating class of 2012 included 1104 graduates. The class included 632 students who received 632 Bachelor's degrees, 67 degrees of Specialists, 382 Master's degrees, 23 graduates of the Business School with MBA degrees. Among them are the first 16 graduates of the new program in Management in Public Relations. They also include 3 graduates in the Master's program in "History of Central and Eastern Europe", with double degrees from National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and the University of Warsaw.

This year's graduation carries particular significance. It is the year when those who were born in 1991, the year of Ukraine's independence, are turning 21 years old. This is the first generation of graduates who were born in independent Ukraine, free of the psychological and historical encumbrances of the Soviet Union. It is with hope and high expectations that they embark on a journey to lead their nation into the future.

On the Necessity for Civic Courage

The Honorable Ambassador William Green Miller
Co-chairman of the Kyiv-Mohyla Foundation of America,
U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine (1993-1998)

In 430 BCE, in Athens, not far from another academy – the very first academy – located just beyond the northwest gate of the city, Pericles, the democratically elected general of Athens, spoke to the assembled citizens of democratic Athens. The Athenian citizens who had gathered together to listen to Pericles' funeral oration commemorating those warriors who had fallen in battle during the first year of the Peloponnesian War against Sparta, heard an extraordinary description of the virtues of democratic Athens. I refer to one sentence in the great Periclean oration, thoughts which I have reflected upon since I first read them in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian Wars, when I was a student of your age. It is of great pertinence now, wherever free men and women live, and of course, here in Kyiv: "Make up your minds that happiness depends on being free, and freedom depends upon being courageous."
